The Queen’s baton relay will take place across 70 nations and territories, travelling 190,000KM over 288 days. Beginning its journey on 9th October 2013 at Buckingham Palace and finishing in Glasgow just in time for the opening ceremony of the games – the baton relay symbolises the coming together of all Commonwealth nations for the festival of sport.
On 4th June 2014, the baton was carried across Southampton where Baton-bearers took part in a variety of events and activities to introduce the public to new sports, arranged by the council and their partners.
Our 46sqm LED screen, stage, PA sound system, cameras and crew were on-site in Guildhall Square, where the annual Mayor Making ceremony was also taking place, to ensure the thousands of spectators in attendance didn’t miss out on any of the action.
Despite the weather doing it best to dampen the proceedings, many people still enjoyed seeing the baton, which carries a message from the Queen that will be opened and read by her Majesty at the opening ceremony of the games.
The final entertainment of the day was a spectacular display by Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalists, La Quebrada Cliff Divers, who performed a series of stunts using the temporary diving pool and 25m diving board constructed for the event.
Our on-site cameras and crew filmed the live action which was edited and streamed onto our LED screen by our screen technician using our on-board edit suite. Local acts also performed on our built-in stage and pre-recorded promotional material was played out on screen to give spectators the opportunity to find out how to get involved in sports around Southampton.
